The ediles de Agricultura y Hacienda attend the last Council for the Defense of the Northwest (02/01/2019)

The councilors of Agriculture and Finance, Juan Valera, and Juan Pedro Muñoz, respectively, attended the convocation of the Council for the Defense of the Northwest last Friday, December 28.

During the meeting, which was presided over by the National Environmental Prize and President of the Council, Pedro Costa, the President of Areca (Caravaca irrigation group), Alonso Sánchez, as well as Maribel Montero, Secretary of Areca, several matters related to serious irregularities and threats in the management of water resources of the Northwest Comarca.

"We must act in the defense of farmers and traditional irrigation in our region and we must take a step forward to denounce to public opinion the water resources in this area of the Region of Murcia." The slogan of the association: "No we want our water to be stolen and they also contaminate us, "they point out from Areca.

For Councilman Bullas, Juan Valera, we must support "the defense of our farmers and the water rights they have granted, always within the laws of environmental protection without causing decline in natural sources as is the case of the Source Mule".

He adds that "we must be in solidarity with farmers who have water rights for ten years, where they are seeing that their natural water sources are drying up because of large wells opened by large fruit and vegetable companies that are moving to our region. "

A serious threat also to an increasingly depopulated rural depopulation where landscapes deteriorate because of these large plantations and that break the benefits that tourism can bring to these areas.

In that meeting it was commented that not only are the flows of natural sources being reduced, but that the aquifers are being polluted due to the large amounts of chemical products that are used.

"Avoiding an environmental disaster like in the Mar Menor is in our hands" was revealed.

Last June, Areca (Association of Communities of Irrigators of Caravaca) presented to the Office of the Prosecutor, with criminal investigation procedures, 192/2018, a report for possible crime against natural resources and the environment.

Subsequently, two other complaints were filed.

In the case of the farm of the Chopillo, in Moratalla, the illegal or irregular transformation of rainfed land to intensive horticultural irrigation in the Northwest Region, which would exceed the 2,000 hectares, according to initial estimates, with consumption of volumes by hectare far superior to the traditional ones.
