A score of professionals in the field of Gerontology and from different parts of the region (Sewer, Calasparra, Cehegín, Cieza), as well as several centers and companies of Bullas, could enjoy an eight-hour intensive training last Saturday in the House of Culture called "Music to Awaken".
The initiative arose through the Municipal Table for the Elderly, an organization that has been working for two and a half years to improve the quality of life of older people in Bullas and La Copa.
Music for "Awakening" is a therapeutic tool initiated at the beginning of 2013 by the Health Psychologist and musician Pepe Olmedo from Granada, with the aim of finding novel alternatives for the management of serious behavioral disorders (agitation, nervousness, aggressiveness, erratic wandering ... ) that are associated with Dementia (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, etc.), and with them improve the state and quality of life of those affected, their relatives, caregivers, and professionals who attend them.
His project began when he entered as a volunteer at the Senior Center "Cáxar de la Vega" of Granada during his studies.
Amateur music since childhood, Pepe thought that the feelings they produced when listening to it could be experienced by patients who are in an advanced or moderate Alzheimer's state.
The attendees could learn how "Music to Awaken" has shown positive results in the agitation and anxiety of people with dementia through different case studies, as well as acquire tools to develop this innovative methodology in their jobs.
The Municipal Table of Seniors thanks all the people attending for creating such an enriching climate.
He also thanks Pepe Olmedo for his human qualities, as well as the opportunity to open a world of possibilities for attendees to work with people with dementia.
Since the organization of this event, the importance of receiving a professional and training of the stature of Pepe and Music for Awakening has been highlighted.
The videos that show this project have had several million visits on the network, its creator has been interviewed in different national and international media such as CNN, has participated in the TEDx talks and has taken his interesting proposal to many centers throughout Spain.
