The Archaeological Museum of Murcia exhibits the Roman statues of the town of Los Cantos de Bullas found by the Civil Guard (24/03/2017)

Starting today at the Archaeological Museum of Murcia (MAM) visitors will find Roman marble statues from the village of Los Cantos in Bullas.

The pieces, which represent three children, were recovered last September by Seprona agents of the Civil Guard, in the framework of the operation 'Kairos' developed in the Plan for the Defense of Spanish Historical Heritage.

The sculptures will be exhibited temporarily, for approximately two months, in one of the rooms of the museum that has been enabled for this occasion, and next to them will also be shown to the public, in two showcases, about thirty archaeological pieces of Which the Civil Guard has seized in different operations.

The regional government councilor and spokeswoman, Noelia Arroyo, today presented the new MAM room and highlighted "the close collaboration and coordination between the Civil Guard and the Historical Heritage Service of the General Directorate of Cultural Property, And protect important pieces of our rich heritage that now, through their exhibition in this museum and after being subjected to a process of cleaning and improvement, we somehow give back to society, citizens. "

This act of presentation of the new room was attended by the Mayor of Bullas, Maria Dolores Muñoz, together with the Councilor for Culture, Antonio José Espín, and the Director of the Wine Museum, Salvador Martínez, noting all the very good conditions in which Are the three sculptures.

The first Edil said that "we hope that these statues have been declared of Cultural Interest soon, after starting the proceedings in November last year, and that we can soon see them in the Bullas Wine Museum."

The sculptures

Despite the limited documentation available, the three marble statues of Roman times, to which must be added a fourth in unknown whereabouts, come from the town of Los Cantos, archaeological site of particular relevance declared BIC.

They were found at the beginning of the 20th century, during excavation work, although since then they were unknown where they were.

The subject of the child with mascot is a recurrent motif in Greek art from the classical and Hellenistic times, initially with funerary sense, but also with a decorative character.

In the case of the sculptures of Bullas, it is possible that they were part of the decoration of a fountain.

Many of these statuettes are dated in the second century AD, although in this case the works could have a later dating.

The statues of Los Cantos are mythological or of genre.

The four can be characterized as statues-source, as the animal of the autumnal kairos (the statue not yet found, the 'Child of the grapes') and the containers supported by the other three erotes are drilled to be connected to a pipe by which would run The water that would supply one or several sources.
