Tips to prevent the spread of tiger mosquitoes in the Region (03/08/2017)

The Ministry of Health has issued advice to prevent the proliferation of tiger mosquito in the Region of Murcia in order to reduce the annoyances that cause people and the transmission of diseases.

Of these councils echoes the Department of Health of the City of Bullas disclosing in the form of leaflets and posters information about the tiger mosquito.

The tiger mosquito has a length of between 2 and 10 millimeters and is characterized by its black coloration with white ornamentation in the thorax and abdomen and by its legs with white and black stripes.

In our environment we prefer to deposit the eggs in small containers with standing water (buckets, pots, small deposits).

Therefore, it is important to prevent their proliferation in the home, avoiding stagnant water.

During the summer, due to the increase in temperatures, the annoyances and risks of vector multiplication are increased, which are basically those animals (insects, arachnids, mollusks) that act as hosts and transmitters of normally microscopic agents responsible for diseases (Bacteria, viruses, parasites).

In areas with a competent vector for the transmission of these diseases, as is the case in the Region of Murcia due to the presence of the tiger mosquito, it is necessary to reinforce the surveillance of these diseases during the summer as the period of maximum activity of the vector.

The Ministry also disseminates advice and recommendations through its web pages Escuela de Salud and Murciasalud.

recommendations

From the General Directorate of Public Health and Addictions it is recommended to wear repellents on the legs because the tiger mosquito usually chooses in the areas closest to the ground, to maintain a correct body hygiene avoiding that they can be attracted to the sweat and strong odors, and Put mosquito nets or use electrical devices against mosquitoes.

Among other measures, domestic water tanks should also be covered to prevent mosquitoes from entering, to avoid accumulating litter and to dispose of it in closed plastic bags, and to use meshes or mosquito nets.

In addition, it is necessary to remember that if a case of chikungunya fever or zika virus disease is detected, the Public Health Directorate should be notified to initiate an epidemiological investigation in order to control the case and avoid any possible autochthonous transmission, as well Such as entomological inspections in the houses and surroundings where the affected people move, integrating all the information to coordinate the corrective actions and the appropriate treatment recommendations to the city councils involved.
