The Civil Guard recovers nearly 10,000 pieces of great historical and cultural value in Bullas (18/06/2016)

4,000 have been seized archaeological pieces, 5,000 coins of different eras and cultures, more than 150 religious objects, paleontological and ethnographic remains 100, 40 paintings and thirty documentation files and literature from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century

The Civil Guard, within the 'Plan for the Protection of Spanish Historical Heritage', has developed the "LIGNUM" operation, which has proceeded to the arrest of a person already investigating another suspected of fifteen criminal acts theft, and receiving undue appropriation.

Also, involving nearly 10,000 pieces of historical and cultural value found in a home in the town of Bullas (Murcia).

The investigation began last year, when Civil Guard was informed that a person, a resident of the municipality of Bullas, could be devoted to collecting all kinds of antique objects, many of which could belong to the Spanish Historical Heritage.

Continuing investigations allowed the agents know that the home of this person could be a painting (portrait of Archbishop of Valladolid, Antonio Garcia and Garcia), the Congregation of the Discalced Carmelites of Tordesillas (Valladolid) had donated to Our Lady of the Rosary of Bullas Church through the collector and had never reached its destination cited.

This information allowed the researchers to meet a series of losses or members depredations of Spanish Historical Heritage assets in the parish of Bullas own and other agencies and institutions of the Murcia region of Northwest.

Among the seized objects paintings of religious and civil character dating from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, important bibliographical documentation of the XVI, XVII, XVIII and XIX, such as baptismal books of births, marriages and wills of the town are Bullas, religious objects (reliquaries, banners, imagery, monstrances, chalices and Lignum Crucis), in addition to elements from archaeological sites in the region of Murcia Noroeste as coins, ceramic vessels, architectural remains and sculptural with a timeline running from the Late Bronze stage, to contemporary times.

also they intervened household items and furniture from stately homes in the area.

The result of the investigations carried out by the Civil Guard in the last of the records at the home of the person under investigation, was found in a double bottom, an important collection of ancient coins, as well as lots of jewelry presumably belonging to the Bullas patron, Our Lady of the Rosary, which were selflessly donated by parishioners.

Single copy of a manuscript of the fourteenth century

The operation has established that one of the books found in the home is a single manuscript, high quality, age and rarity.

This is a Book of Psalms dated between the late fourteenth and early fifteenth century that probably is a copy of an older French origin prayerbook.

The copy, written in Latin with gothic lettering and gilded capitals, lacks adequate conservation, which has caused some damage requiring urgent restoration work.

The spoliation of these cultural assets for profit results in the disappearance of these objects that end up swelling private collections, subtracting the knowledge society and contemplation thereof purposes latter that should be the ultimate goal.

So far they have been clarified fifteen criminal acts in which both individuals have been affected, including museums, churches, town halls and archaeological sites.

The detainee and the person being investigated, along with recovered and proceedings initiated effects have been made available to the Court of Instruction No. 1 of Mula (Murcia).

The seized objects were deposited at the disposal of Heritage Service of the CARM.

The continuing investigation opened so no further arrests.
