Culture will declare BIC the Roman statues of the village of Los Cantos de Bullas recovered in September by the Civil Guard (27/11/2016)

The Ministry of Culture and Portavocía has initiated the procedure of declaration of BIC in favor of the archaeological complex of four marble statues from Roman times from the town of Los Cantos in Bullas.

The resolution with which the declaration is officially launched will be published in the coming days in the Official Gazette of the Region of Murcia (BORM).

Last September, agents of the Seprona Civil Guard recovered three statues more than 2,000 years old from Los Cantos in the framework of Operation 'Kairos', within the Plan for the Defense of Spanish Historical Heritage .

The pieces were made available to the Court of Instruction n ° 1 of Mula and are preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Murcia until its restoration and cataloging.

The discovery of these statues constitutes, according to the director general of Cultural Property, Maria Comas, "an additional sample of the close collaboration and coordination existing between the Civil Guard and the Historical Patrimony Service of the Counseling, which allows recovering and protecting the Rich regional heritage in the best conditions ".

Despite the scant documentation, the three statues, to which must be added a fourth ( 'Child of the grapes') in unknown whereabouts but also included in the BIC declaration, come from the site of the town of Los Cantos.

They were found at the beginning of the 20th century, during excavation work, although since then they were unknown where they were.

The subject of the child with mascot is a recurrent motif from the classical and Hellenistic times, initially with funerary sense, but also with a decorative character.

In the case of the sculptures of Bullas, it is possible that they were part of the decoration of a fountain.

Many of these statuettes are dated in the second century AD, although in this case the works could have a later dating.

The statues of Los Cantos are mythological or genre works.

The four can also be characterized as statues-source, since the animal of the autumn kairos (the statue not yet found) and the containers supported by the other three 'erotes' are perforated to be connected to a pipe where the water would run Would supply one or several sources.

The objective, added Comas, "is that the sculptures, which formed an indivisible archaeological complex, remain united and obtain the maximum protection, just as the Roman villa of Los Cantos is already protected, a site of particular relevance declared BIC with zone category Archaeological ".

Likewise, "the sculptural group of Los Cantos constitutes, according to the report made by the technicians of Culture, an excellent exponent of Roman art in the Region and, thanks to its good conservation, has an extraordinary value for archaeological research, and That the pieces are testimony to the way of life of its owners and the social model of the time, "said the director general.

THE PIECES

The first statue is the 'Child with Pigeon', which shows an exceptional state of conservation.

Sculpted in white marble, it represents a naked young child of soft and rounded forms with a slightly forward leg, as if it were beginning the march.

With his left arm bent, he holds a small bird, perhaps a dove.

In addition to this sculpture, two other almost identical and similar subjects were recovered.

They are children who hold with their left arm a bird of great proportions, apparently a duck, while in their right hand they carry a jug leaning on a pedestal.

Both sculptures have similar dimensions, but one of them is missing the head.

The pieces have a marked decorative character and an exceptional conservation, in spite of the loss of the head and the forehead of the duck that it carries.

Sculpted in white marble, they are sculptures of round package whose back is perfectly worked, indicating that they were conceived to be seen by its four sides.
