Approved the delimitation of the fortress of El Castellar in Bullas as BIC (20/09/2017)

The Council of Government has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment to delimit the environment of protection of the Cultural Interest, with category of 'Monument', of the fortress of El Castellar in Bullas.

The site is located in El Molinar, in one of the elevations of the Peña Rubia, on the right bank of the Mula River.

It is a hill of great height, which reaches 731 meters, delimited by rocky cuts on its north, east and west sides, which houses a medieval Islamic fort built in the 12th century, whose occupation lasted until the second half of century XIII.

The preserved remains of the castle are very scarce.

The most relevant are the uprooting of the walls of what appears to be a quadrangular tower, located at the southern end of the hill, the only place that has an easy access from the Peña Rubia, not being protected by strong rocky cuts.

The delimitation of this BIC is integrated by all the archaeological remains and stratigraphic contexts that integrate the archaeological site and the monument.

In addition, it has a favorable report from the University of Murcia, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Santa María de la Arrixaca and the Royal Academy Alfonso X the Wise.

The Castellar must have been administratively dependent on the fortress of Bullas.

For this reason, along with the latter castle and those of Cehegín and Caravaca, it was part of the defensive constructions that came to depend on the Bailiwick of the Order of the Temple that was established, after royal donation, in the second half of the thirteenth century.

Nevertheless, the place of Bullas was depopulated between the end of that century and the beginning of the next, and probably its fortress and the one of El Castellar were abandoned or destroyed, although some historians maintain the continuity of use of this one like border watchman during the Middle Ages.
