Bullas City Council has received the award for its work in preserving and increasing biodiversity by 2010, in the Competition III Project for Increasing Biodiversity.
The ceremony, held in Madrid, at the headquarters of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, and which was attended by the Mayor of the Municipality, D.
Esteban Egea Fernández, and the Town Planning and Environment, D.
Jose Maria Ortega Gonzalez, was chaired by the Minister of Rural and Marine Environment, Rosa Aguilar.
The project "Promoting Farm and Co-management of protected areas through the reintroduction of the vulture and the recovery of populations of arbutus unedo (strawberry tree) in the mountains of the Municipality of Bullas, the Department of Environment of the City Bullas was submitted to this competition in the category E, endowed with 25,000 €.
This project seeks to reintroduce the vultures in the skies over the mountains of Bullas, and he disappeared for them in the decades of the 60's, when farmers began to abandon the animal traction.
With the reintroduction of this species increase biodiversity in a very visible to the inhabitants of the area, creating a space where farmers in the municipality of Bullas can get rid of dead animals, while respecting the rules established for cases of contagious diseases.
In parallel, promote agro-tourism and volunteer activities, both for knowledge of the vulture to the repopulation of Arbutus unedo (strawberry tree), now in decline in the area due to overexploitation.
This award, which is in addition to receiving a few months ago, also from the Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, the project "every Bullas a tree," shows once again the interest of the Municipality of Bullas and policy development sustainable generous with the environment.
